Jan Fugit

Instructor (Ballet)

Jan Clark Fugit received her formation at the National Ballet in Washington D.C. She joined the Denver Civic Ballet under the direction of American Ballet Theatre’s Enrique Martinez and later became a member of Ballet Colorado directed by Milenko Banovic. She was promoted to Principal dancer performing leading roles in classical and contemporary genre including “The Nutcracker,“ “The Sleeping Beauty ,“ and “Swan Lake.” Jan went on to perform as a Principal dancer in The Central City Opera productions under the auspices of The Metropolitan Opera in New York City.

Jan holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in dance from Loretto Heights College and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Utah with an emphasis in pedagogy and choreography.

A teacher of national renown, Jan has served on the faculties of several academies, colleges and universities including the University of Hawaii, Ballet Hawaii, Loretto Heights College and the University of Utah. She created and implemented a four curriculum and syllabus for students majoring in ballet pedagogy for Loretto Heights College in Denver Colorado. Jan was a prominent member on the faculty of the Ballet West Christensen Academy and the Division of Continuing Education programs at the University of Utah directed by Willam Christensen. She was a full time instructor for The School of Ballet West under directors Bruce Marks and John Hart. She served four years on the Utah Arts Council’s arts advisory board.

Jan co-owned and directed The Ballet School in Salt Lake City for ten years, creating a graded syllabus for children ages six and older making it one of Utah’s premiere academies for training young professionals. Jan was a principal faculty member for the Ballet West Academy from 2006-2015 and served as Academy Principal for the 2016 year. She created Classical Ballet Classes where she has taught and mentored select students to achieve great success in companies, trainee programs and colleges world-wide.

Working in collaboration with Rene Daveluy, Director of Central West Ballet in California, Jan has choreographed several critically acclaimed full-length ballets such as “Coppelia,” “Peter and the Wolf,” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” as well as many repertory works.

Jan is excited to continue on faculty for the OU School of Dance.
