OU Dancers Take a Giant Leap to China
On Sept. 15, a select group of dancers from the University of Oklahoma School of Dance will take the first step on a long journey to China, where they will dance for audiences in Beijing. The six dancers, all seniors from OU’s modern dance company, Contemporary Dance Oklahoma (C.D.O.), will be accompanied by their teacher and choreographer, assistant professor Roxanne Lyst. The University of Beijing will host the International Creative Dance Seminar (I.C.D.S.), and the OU School of Dance has been invited to participate in this exciting event.
The students will take master classes each morning during the seminar and rehearse for the performance on Saturday, Sept. 23, at the University Theater. They will perform Fragmant/ation Volume 2, choreographed by Lyst. The dancers participating in the I.C.D.S are: Bethany Raley, Infiniti Eaglin, Nacoleon Hillsman, Alexandra Lane, Megan Watson and Nicole Young.
Lyst, a former dancer with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater who has been to Beijing three times, will also teach several master classes in modern dance at the University of Beijing. Several of the students already have experienced international travel, dancing in Barcelona, Spain with the OU School of Dance’s summer program there. All participants expressed excitement about traveling to China and meeting new people. Young related the sentiment of every dancer when she said, “Travel and dance bring people together.”
